3.6 Extract Tagged Variables

When the Extract Tagged Variables button is clicked, the following Web page will appear and the fields will be blank. From this page the user can set up an extract of the tagged variables by placing restrictions on the universe of tagged variables and can choose what types of output are desired. The Extract Options on this page are so clear that no discussion of them is necessary here.

The Universe Restrictors are set up by the user to further limit what tagged variables will be extracted from the tag set. The Condition fields are used to select a variable from the set and create the conditon that limits it.

To continue with our sample tag set of four variables: let's limit the variables for extraction to Black men.

Name Question Variable Title Year
1 R0000100 CASEID IDENTIFICATION CODE 1979
2 R0000149 *Created HOUSEHOLD IDENTIFICATION NUMBER 1979
3 R0214700 *Created R'S RACIAL/ETHNIC COHORT FROM SCREENER 1979
4 R0214800 *Created SEX OF R 1979

This means, the Race variable, R0214700, should be chosen in condition 1 and limited to (=) 'black'; and the Sex variable, R0214800, chosen in condition 2 and set equal to 'men'. But to limit these conditions to 'black' and 'men', how does one know what the 'settings' for these conditions should be? The Codebook page of the variable give the response codes for the answers. Click on the corresponding variable names above, to see their codebook pages. Notice the response codes for BLACK = 2 and MALE = 1. These are the settings to be used in Conditions 1 and 2, see the tutorial steps below the image.

In order to limit the variables for extraction to Black men:

Select R0214700 in condition 1, and
Limit it (=) to '2' without the quotes.

Select R0214800 in condition 2, and
Limit it (=) to '2' without the quotes.

Choose an Output File Type, e.g., Delimited ASCII data file, by clicking on a radio button.
Uncheck the "Generate SPSS Statements..." option so no SPSS file will be generated.

Check the Codebook pages for extracted variables checkbox, by clicking on it.

 Click the Submit Extract button.

Results
After the Submit button is pressed the extract will be run and delivered to the user's account (My Account) in a zip container. Depending on the requests made by the user, the zip container may include a data file (format varies), a (SAS System) log file, a list file (the SAS MEANS procedure), a SAS statements file (.sas), an SPSS statements file (.sps), and a codebook file (.cdb). To open the container and view the files, the user should have the archive utility, WinZip. With it, the user can then view the files in the the zip container from inside the utility.
