INTERVIEWER: THE COMPUTER SAYS THAT TODAY'S DATE IS [CURDATE~X] IS THIS THE CORRECT DATE?
INTERVIEWER: PLEASE ENTER TODAY'S DATE.
(INTERVIEWER READ TO R:)The U.S. Department of Labor asks you to participate in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997, Round 11, a survey of how early life experiences affect people's life changes, attitudes, and experiences throughout adulthood. This study is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics. Your participation is vital to the success of this study. This study is voluntary, and you may decline to answer specific questions. You also may end the interview at any point. You will receive $[INCENTIVE] as a token of appreciation for participating in the study. This survey is conducted to understand the labor market experiences of young adults. Personal identifiers such as name, address, and social security number will be held in confidence and will not be released to the public without your consent. All personnel associated with this study have signed a legal document in which they pledge to protect the confidentiality of the information that survey participants provide. The survey will relate your family, community background, and schooling to the establishment of careers and independent households. As you may remember from previous rounds of the survey, the questionnaire covers such topics as schooling, job training, marriage, substance use, reproductive behavior, illegal activity, employment, income, and assets. The information will help researchers and policy makers understand what helps adults be successful and what obstacles are most difficult for people to overcome.
INTERVIEWER: ATTEMPT TO GAIN R'S CONSENT TO PROCEED WITH THE INTERVIEW. IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO GAIN CONSENT, BREAK OFF THE INTERVIEW AT THIS POINT AND MAKE A RECORD OF ALL INFORMATION THAT COULD BE USEFUL IN GAINING THE RESPONDENT'S COOPERATION AT A LATER DATE.
Again this year, we've made some changes to the questionnaire based on your feedback. For example, we no longer ask you to confirm information from the previous interview unless you want to correct it - we hope this will make the interview seem less repetitive. [We've also tried to reduce the time spent at the end of the interview taking care of administrative details] There are also some new topics throughout the interview that may interest you but haven't been part of our interview in the past. We value your participation and would like to improve your NLSY97 experience while still collecting the details of your life that make the NLSY97 so valuable for research. My computer is equipped to record this interview for quality control, testing, and training purposes. As always your confidentiality is protected by Federal law and the policies of the Bureau of Labor Statistics and NORC. May I continue with the recording?INTERVIEWER: IF R REFUSES TO BE RECORDED, PRESS THE MICROPHONE BUTTON IN THE UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER OF THE QUESTION SCREEN. AND THEN SAY TO THE RESPONDENT: I have now disabled the recording function. Let's begin the interview.
We appreciate your help in answering these questions. As part of this survey I will ask you some questions that may help us contact you in the future. By sharing this contact information, you give your permission for us to use it to try to contact you for future interviews. In attempting to reach you, we will never reveal any of the answers you've provided to the survey questions.
If the contacts you have provided offer the names of other people who may help us reach you, may we contact those people as well?
[LOCATORCHANGE]==1COMMENT: This respondent is to receive the alternate locator format
We value your participation each year. Address and phone information in directories and public records can help us reach you. May we use them, only if needed?
If you are or were to become a member of the Armed Forces, or if you were to enter a correctional facility or a residential care facility, may we contact government or other administrative officials to get their help in locating and interviewing you? When attempting to locate and interview you, we may reveal the fact that you are a participant in this survey. However, as stated earlier, we will never reveal any of the answers you've provided to the survey questions.
