Significant changes made between the October 2005 round 7 event history file release and the October 2006 round 8 file release

1) Dropped case and sampling weight variables - Round 6 and Round 7
All data for case 8479 in rounds 6 and 7 have been deleted, as interviewers discovered that the wrong person had been interviewed in those rounds. As a result, the round 6 and round 7 sampling weight variables were recomputed. The change to the round 6 SAMPLING_WEIGHT_CC affected 108 respondents while the change to the round 7 SAMPLING_WEIGHT_CC affected 109 respondents.

2) NEWSCHOOL Roster - Round 1 and Round 2
In order to make the use of the NEWSCHOOL roster comparable for all NLSY97 rounds, the following changes were made:

  1. A NEWSCHOOL roster was added to the round 1 year data that includes the school/college that the respondent was attending or had most recently attended at the time of the round 1 interview.
  2. b) Schools on the round 2 NEWSCHOOL roster that the respondent had not attended since prior to the round 1 interview were removed from the round 2 NEWSCHOOL roster. The removal of these schools produced the changes in the round 2 data that are listed below. The round 2 variables that have been updated for ten or more cases are the following:
  3. NEWSCHOOL_START1.01 - 39 cases
    NEWSCHOOL_STOP1.01 - 39 cases
    NEWSCHOOL_SCHCODE.01 - 108 cases
    NEWSCHOOL_INTERVIEW.01 - 115 cases
    NEWSCHOOL_PUBID.01 - 116 cases

3) HHI Roster - Round 5 and Round 6
When the collection of household members’ race was switched to a mark-all-that-apply question in round 5, the procedures for collecting and storing the race of household members were changed. These changes contributed to a failure to pass along the race variable data from one round to the next for a significant number of household members. These variables have now been updated in rounds 5 and 6, and the rounds 7 and 8 household race variables are now fully available. Variables that have been updated for ten or more cases are listed below:

4) Military pay grade- Round 2 and Round 3
The roster variables that indicate military paygrade, YEMP_MILPAY.xx, have incorrect values in the round 2 and round 3 data. All zero values in those variables in rounds 2 and 3 should be recoded to -4's. These variables will be updated in the next data release.

5) Created number of schools variables - Round 5 to Round 7
A small programming error caused the following variables to be incorrect in the round 6 event history release: CV_SCH_ATTEND_EVER (14 cases in round 5, 22 cases in round 6, and 49 cases in round 7) and CV_SCH_ATTEND_YR (14 cases in round 5, 22 cases in round 6, and 49 cases in round 7). These values were corrected for the round 8 release.

6) Created school size and student-teacher variables - Round 1 to Round 7
A glitch in the program for the school size and student teacher ratio variables caused a large number of invalid skips to be assigned in prior rounds. The following corrections were made in the corresponding rounds:

Round 1: 926 cases for both CV_SCHOOL_SIZE and CV_STUDENT_TEACHER_RATIO
Round 2: 1632 cases for CV_SCHOOL_SIZE and 1624 cases for CV_STUDENT_TEACHER_RATIO
Round 3: 749 cases for both CV_SCHOOL_SIZE and CV_STUDENT_TEACHER_RATIO
Round 4: 602 cases for CV_SCHOOL_SIZE and 606 cases for CV_STUDENT_TEACHER_RATIO
Round 5: 459 cases for CV_SCHOOL_SIZE and 460 cases for CV_STUDENT_TEACHER_RATIO
Round 6: 340 cases for both CV_SCHOOL_SIZE and CV_STUDENT_TEACHER_RATIO
Round 7: 288 cases for both CV_SCHOOL_SIZE and CV_STUDENT_TEACHER_RATIO

7) Created child status variable - Round 5 to Round 7
Due to a change in the questionnaire categories for questions YFER-1850 and YFER-5900, it could no longer be determined whether a respondent’s child was in foster care. As a result the created variable category - as well as the code assigned to certain respondents - for this question changed beginning in round 5. The variables and number of cases affected are the following:

Round 5: CV_CHILD_STATUS.01 - 1 case, CV_CHILD_STATUS.02 - 1 case
Round 6: CV_CHILD_STATUS.01 - 32 cases, CV_CHILD_STATUS.02 - 8 cases, CV_CHILD_STATUS.03 - 1 case
Round 7: CV_CHILD_STATUS.01 - 52 cases, CV_CHILD_STATUS.02 - 9 cases, CV_CHILD_STATUS.03 - 4 cases, CV_CHILD_STATUS.04 - 1 case, CV_CHILD_STATUS.05 - 1 case

8) Created fertility variables - Round 6 and Round 7
A child was determined to have never existed for respondent #4627. As a result, the following created variables were updated to reflect this information:

Round 6: CV_BIO_CHILD_HH, CV_BIO_CHILD_NR, CV_CHILD_BIRTH_DATE.01~M, CV_CHILD_BIRTH_DATE.01~Y, CV_CHILD_BIRTH_MONTH.01
Round 7: CV_BIO_CHILD_HH, CV_BIO_CHILD_NR, CV_CHILD_BIRTH_DATE.01~M, CV_CHILD_BIRTH_DATE.01~Y, CV_CHILD_BIRTH_MONTH.01

A child was determined to have never existed for respondent #6465. As a result, the following created variables were updated to reflect this information:

Round 7: CV_BIO_CHILD_HH, CV_CHILD_BIRTH_MONTH.02, CV_CHILD_BIRTH_DATE.02~M, CV_CHILD_BIRTH_DATE.02~Y

9) Created marriage variables - Round 4 to Round 7
New data led to updated information on the marriages and cohabitations of 4 respondents. The affected variables and respondents are the following:

Respondents #2156 and #6039 in round 7 CV_FIRST_COHAB_DATE~M, CV_FIRST_COHAB_DATE~Y, CV_FIRST_COHAB_MONTH
Respondent #3970 in round 4, round 5, and round 6: CV_COHAB_TTL
Respondent #6269 in round 5, round 6, and round 7: CV_MARRIAGES_TTL

10) Created highest grade completed variables - Round 3 to Round 6
A small programming error was discovered in the program that computes the highest grade completed variables as of June [CV_HGC_YR]. Updates were made to this variable for the listed number of respondents in following rounds:

Round 3: 2 cases
Round 4: 5 cases
Round 5: 9 cases
Round 6: 2 cases

Significant changes made between the round 6 event history release and the round 7 main release

1) Created weeks worked per job variables - Round 5 and Round 6
A review of the employment variables revealed that the weeks worked variables for respondents who worked at a job but took a break from it for a round or more such that it was not reported during the intervening round were missing the data from past rounds. This problem was confined to the round 5 and round 6 data and has been corrected for the round 7 main release. Variables that have been updated for 10 or more cases are listed below:

    13CV_WKSWK_JOB_YR.03.98
    12CV_WKSWK_JOB_YR.03.99

2) Created jobs worked variables - Round 6
Due to a coding error in matching jobs across rounds, the number of all jobs per year (CV_TTL_JOB_YR_ALL.01/.02), the number of employer-type jobs per year (CV_TTL_JOB_YR_ET.01/.02), and the number of self-employed jobs per year (CV_TTL_JOB_YR_SE.01/.02) in 2001 and 2002 were incorrectly specified in the round 6 release. In addition, a small number of updates were made to the variables measuring the number of all adult jobs (CV_TTL_JOB_ADULT_ALL) and the number of adult employee-type jobs (CV_TTL_JOB_ADULT_ET). All of these variables have been updated in the round 7 main release.

3) Created hours worked variables - Round 6
Due to a small coding error, the CV_HOURS_WK_TEEN variable was updated for 328 respondents. This was corrected as of the round 7 main data release.

4) Created number of schools variables - Round 4 to Round 6
A small programming error caused the following variables to be incorrect in the round 6 event history release: CV_SCH_ATTEND_EVER (affects 15 in round 4, 38 in round 5, 57 in round 6) and CV_SCH_ATTEND_YR (affects 15 in round 4, 37 in round 5, 56 in round 6). These values were corrected for the round 7 main release.

5) Created migration variable - Round 6
A review of the migration variables revealed that the CV_MIGRATION.01 variable was miscoded for 26 respondents. This variable has been updated in the round 7 main release.

Significant changes made between the round 6 event history release and the round 7 event history release

1) Schooling Event History Arrays - all rounds
Users who compare the round 6 NLSY97 Schooling Event History Arrays with round 7 data for the same time periods will see that a number of respondents have their schooling status changed from enrolled to not enrolled. After the round 6 schooling event histories were created, a detailed check was done to ensure an accurate set of created variables were being released. During the checking process a number of problems were uncovered that were fixed. Fixing these problems caused the schooling status changes.

The first issue found was that a number of respondents stated they were taking college courses but these individuals were not enrolled for a college degree. In addition some people were found to be taking GED courses at a college. Prior to the round 7 release all of these people were incorrectly marked as being enrolled in college, when in fact they were only sitting in a college classroom.

To fix this issue, code was added to all rounds. The code first captures the type of diploma the person is pursuing. If that degree is not a true college degree (i.e. not an associates, bachelors, or masters) then the respondent as of the round 7 release is marked as not enrolled.

The second issue was that a number of respondents were found taking high school courses after they reported having their high school graduation. Some of these classes were enrichment classes, while others appear to be misreported or inconsistent dates. Prior to round 7 these graduates were marked as being enrolled in high school, no matter what their degree status. To fix these issues the schooling event histories now consider someone enrolled in high school only until they graduate After high school graduation, all courses and dates that the respondent provides for high school classes are not included in the event histories.

The third issue found was that a number people were taking both college courses and attending secondary school at the same. Prior to the round 7 release the program gave priority to college and it marked the respondent in at least grade 13. As of the round 7 release, the event history program now considers secondary school a higher priority than college. In the data there are a number of respondents who took a few college courses during their high school years. Because college was given higher priority in the round 6 release and earlier these people, who were in 9th to 12th grade suddenly jumped to the 13th grade. If the college program lasted just one semester the respondent not only jumped ahead but also jumped backward in grades resulting in both extra promotions and extra grade regressions. By ensuring high school takes a higher priority these sharp transitions in the event histories are avoided.

Significant changes made to the July 2005 round 7 Mainfile

1) Partners roster variable
Due to a documentation error, the year variables for start and stop date of cohabitation are missing for the 2002 and 2003 PARTNERS roster variables. These variables are included in the following file missingpartneryears.zip.

2) Created MSA variable - Round 6 and Round 7
The respondents residing abroad were miscoded as a valid skip (-4) in the round 6 and round 7 CV_MSA variables; the correct code is 5. This change will affect 27 respondents in round 6 and 23 respondents in round 7. These variables will be updated as of the round 7 event history release

3) Other parents roster variable
A number of the year 2002 variables on the OTHERPARENTS roster were inadvertently left off of the public data release. These variables are included in the following file missingotherparentsvars.zip

The above error is in the documentation only; no changes to the data are necessary. This error will be corrected in the next release of the NLSY97 data.

2) Created weeks worked per year variables
Corrections were made to the values of the CV_WKSWK_YR series (CV_WKSWK_YR_ALL, CV_WKSWK_YR_ET, CV_WKSWK_YR_SE) for 269 respondents; all rounds were affected by these changes.

Three programming changes affected 69 respondents in round 1. First, a small number of previously unaccounted for within-job gaps were included in the program. This variable was also amended for respondents who reported an invalid month and a valid year to reflect the weeks worked in subsequent years. Finally, the respondent who was assigned an invalid skip in YEMP-200 was reassigned a 0 for all years rather than an invalid skip. Additionally, this update standardized this variable years for respondents who skipped out of the employment section due to age constraints. A 0 was assigned rather than a valid skip for these respondents in some years; this update imposed the same rule on all years.

In addition to reflecting the corrections made during round 1, the round 2 version of this variable was incorrectly calculated by the archivist for those who reported a job beginning before the date of the previous interview (e.g., back-reporters). There were 74 respondents affected by the round 2 changes.

Beginning in round 3, back-reported jobs were included as part of the program rather than hand editing each case. This program used the prior year's weeks arrays to generate the correct number of weeks worked. However, due to an incorrect input file, back-reported jobs included data from only those weeks per year reported in the previous round rather than the weeks per year previously reported across all rounds. For example, the new count reflected only the weeks worked in round 3 and round 2, but not round 1; this error continued through round 6. This correction resulted in the values of 126 respondents in round 3 begin updated to include all rounds of data. In round 4, 250 respondents were affected by this correction; in round 5 the number of respondents was 243; and in round 6, there were 235 respondents affected.

All updated data are in the following file:
CV_WKSWK_ERR.ZIP

The updated data by round are in the following files:
Round 1: CV_WKSWK_R1ERR.ZIP
Round 2: CV_WKSWK_R2ERR.ZIP
Round 3: CV_WKSWK_R3ERR.ZIP
Round 4: CV_WKSWK_R4ERR.ZIP
Round 5: CV_WKSWK_R5ERR.ZIP
Round 6: CV_WKSWK_R6ERR.ZIP

3) Created income and poverty variables
In the round 6 program that creates the CV_INCOME_GROSS_YR variable and the CV_HH_POV_RATIO variable, the CV_UI_YR.01 variables was mistakenly added into the total rather than that CV_AMT_UI_YR.01 variable. This change affected the CV_INCOME_GROSS_YR variable for 96 respondents and the CV_HH_POV_RATIO for 93 respondents. In addition, a change in the topcoded value resulted for additional respondents.

The updated data are in the following file:
CV_INC_POV_ERR.ZIP

4) Created residence variable
The round 6 created residence variable CV_TTL_RESIDENCES_EDT was updated to limit the data the 858 respondents who answered YCHR-1070. For all other respondents the data should have been a valid skip (-4).

CV_TTL_RESIDENCES_EDT_ERR.ZIP

Significant changes made between the round 5 event history release
and the round 6 main release

1) Created highest grade completed variables - Round 2
Corrections were made to the values of the round 2 variables CV_HGC_EVER (793 cases) and CV_HGC_YEAR (794 cases). Most corrections reflect updates in cases where the respondent was read an incorrect grade for the highest grade completed during the round 1 interview, but the respondent did not corrected this information. Previously, CV_HGC_EVER was incorrectly coded using the loop information, which relies on a correct report from the round 1 interview, but now reflects the respondent's report of the highest grade completed since the round 1 interview. Additional corrections were made to standardize conditions used in creating these variables from round 3 to the present. The updated version of the round 2 program can be found in the following file: cvhgcR2_n.sas.

2) Created hours worked variables - Round 5
There were corrections to 67 respondents in the round 5 CV_HOURS_WK_ADULT_ET variable and 10 respondents in the round 5 CV_HOURS_WK_TEEN variable. These corrections were due to small coding errors in the program. The PUBIDs for the CV_HOURS_WK_ADULT_ET variable are the following: 335, 382, 426, 486, 539, 769, 962, 1072, 1085, 1226, 1274, 1343, 1534, 1576, 1790, 1854, 1860, 2011, 2076, 2163, 2403, 2568, 2579, 2679, 2744, 2829, 2869, 3132, 3312, 3325, 3337, 3548, 3650, 4131, 4179, 4206, 4276, 4489, 4561, 4563, 5094, 5132, 5146, 5222, 5658, 5721, 5998, 6214, 6459, 7061, 7147, 7191, 7192, 7227, 7393, 7478, 7614, 7865, 8027, 8240, 8312, 8481, 8535, 8565, 8572, 8582, and 8637. The PUBIDs for the CV_HOURS_WK_TEEN variable are the following: 2135, 2510, 2820, 3475, 4444, 5600, 5640, 6964, 10930, and 15755.

3) Created weeks worked variables - Round 5
Due to an incorrectly specified input variable, the round 5 weeks worked at a self-employed job (CV_WKSWK_YR_SE.02 for 2186 respondents) and at an employer job (CV_WKSWK_YR_ET.02 for 82 respondents) were overestimated for respondents who held both job types during these weeks. Respondents who only held one type of job were not affected. These variables were updated as of the round 6 main release.

4) Created fertility variables - All rounds
A review of the created fertility data revealed some between-round inconsistencies in coding when a respondent's children lived outside the household. The variables affected were the following: CV_BIO_CHILD_HH, CV_BIO_CHILD_NR, CV_CHILD_BIRTH_DATE~M, CV_CHILD_BIRTH_DATE~Y, CV_CHILD_BIRTH_MONTH, CV_CHILD_STATUS, CV_CHILD_DEATH_DATE~M, CV_CHILD_DEATH_DATE~Y, and CV_CHILD_DEATH_MONTH. Updates were made to the round 6 releases for the following respondents: R1 - 2310; R2 - 2310, 5848, 7138, 8228, 8625; R3 - 11, 441, 1580, 1854, 2310, 3299, 3806, 4119, 4120, 4468, 6653, 7138, 8037, 8066, 8246, 8346, 8701, 8748, 8781; R4 - 441, 769, 2310, 3299, 7138, 7675, 8037, 8052, 8346, 8729; R5 - 227, 441, 2310, 3299, 5325, 6491, 7138, 8052, 8346, 8729.

5) Created hourly wage and created hourly compensation variables - All rounds
Corrections reflect (1) a standardization of the wage programs across all rounds, (2) the addition of wages from previous rounds when the jobs lasts less than 13 weeks in total and spans two rounds, and (3) small coding errors.

Observations affected by changes to the hourly wage variable (CV_HRLY_PAY.xx):
R2: job 1 =59, job 2=41, job 3=26, job 4=17, job 5=4, job 6=4, job 7=1;
R3: job 1 =50, job 2=70, job 3=46, job 4=24, job 5=6, job 6=3, job 7=2;
R4: job 1 =102, job 2=143, job 3=95, job 4=49, job 5=17, job 6=6, job 7=3, job 8=1;
R5: job 1 =44, job 2=18, job 3=3, job 4=1, job 5=1.

Observations affected by changes to the hourly compensation variable (CV_HRLY_COMPENSATION.xx):
R2: job 1=177, job 2=83, job 3=36, job 4=22, job 5=8, job 6=4, job 7=1;
R3: job 1 =226, job 2=112, job 3=50, job 4=24, job 5=5, job 6=2, job 7=3;
R4: job 1 =280, job 2=204, job 3=106, job 4=50, job 5=14, job 6=6, job 7=1, job8=2;
R5: job 1 =1, job 2=5, job 3=1, job 4=4, job 6=1, job 8=1.

Significant changes made between the round 6 main release
and the round 6 event history release

1) Reference Number changes - Event History Arrays for the year 2000
Due to data processing constraints, the reference numbers (refum) for the event history arrays referring to year 2000 data were changed between the round 5 release and the round 6 release. The file R6EH_RUNM.xls contains a crosswalk between the round 5 and the round 6 rnumbers. Click here to download R6EH_RUNM.xls in a new window.

2) Created net worth variables - Round 4, Round 5, and Round 6
A small coding error in the CV_HH_NET_WORTH_Y program used in previous rounds was discovered. The previously released data included both the amount of a loan from friends, etc... (YAST-3812) and the amount of the loan not paid back (YAST-3882) rather than including only the amount still owed. Incorrect data in round 4 (pubid=539, 2273), in round 5 (pubid=1838, 2601, 3897, 3957, 4072, 4140, 8640) and in round 6 (pubid=2704, 3897, 4191, 4891, 5495, 6424) were updated in the October 2004 release.

3) County City Data Book variables - Round 6 and beyond
County level data from the County City Data Book will no longer be included on the NLSY97 geocode release. Users wishing to use these data will find the 2000 edition of the County City Data Book is available from the U.S. Census Bureau at http://www.census.gov/statab/www/ccdb.html.

4) Created enrollment variable - Round 6
During preparation for the round 6 event history release, it was discovered that the created enrollment variable (CV_ENROLLSTAT) contained a coding error that incorrectly listed the status of 47 respondents as not enrolled. This error was corrected in the round 6 event history release. The PUBIDs of the respondents affected by the CV_ENROLLSTAT changes are the following: 753, 855, 1008, 1054, 1410, 1516, 1709, 2083, 3009, 3181, 3301, 3555, 3784, 3865, 3968, 4067, 4116, 4346, 4459, 4942, 5464, 5798, 5860, 5973, 6002, 6065, 6237, 6487, 6518, 6579, 6687, 6777, 6826, 7050, 7227, 7259, 7582, 8194, 8221, 8501, 8724, 8727, 8833, 8922, 8944, 8947, and 9021.

5) Sampling weight variables - Round 6

Following the round 6 release, it was discovered that the documentation was reversed for the following round 6 variables: SAMPLING_WEIGHT_CC and SAMPLING_PANEL_WEIGHT. This documentation is correct on the round 6 event history release.

Round 5 Errata

R5 Errata affecting the August 2003 Release: Round 5 Schooling Created Variables
(CV_SCH_ATTEND_YR)

A programming error in the code that creates this variable inadvertently counted the number of schools the respondent attended as of June 2000 rather than the correct date of June 2001. Updating this variable to reflect the correct date affected the number of schools attended by 140 respondents. Most (130 respondents) attended 1 additional school, while five respondents attended two additional schools. The data in the R5M_NumSch.dat file fixes this problem. Researchers should use the CV_SCH_ATTEND_YR variable in this file rather than the variable presently contained on the August 2003 version of the NLSY97 Event History data.

The Rnumber that corresponds to this variable is the following: R7237600 [CV_SCH_ATTEND_YR]

R5 Errata affecting the August 2003 Release: Schooling Event History

Two mistakes in the round 5 NLSY97 Schooling Event History Arrays have been fixed. The round five public release has a large number of illegal skips (-3) in the enrollment arrays. These illegal skips values were set to unknown by the program that creates the schooling histories but were accidentally converted to illegal skip upon public release. Researchers using the fixed data will see, instead of illegal skips, respondents flagged as not enrolled.

The second error is that some of the semesters respondents spent in college were not included in the event histories. The semesters that were not included were those whose start dates were not explicitly stated. The NLSY97 questionnaire tries to elicit the starting date of every college semester, but it is possible for respondents to indicate that they are still in college and by-pass the start date questions. Semester start and stop dates are now estimated for respondents who by-pass this portion of the questionnaire.

Fixed data monthly schooling data will be integrated with the NLSY97 round 6 event history release.

R5 Errata affecting the August 2003 Release: Round 5 Employment Event History
(EMP_HOURS_2000.10 to EMP_HOURS_2001.22)

An event history file that updates the hours worked per week did not load into the data set properly which caused data for select respondents to be missing from the tenth week of 2000 (EMP_HOURS_2000.10) to the twenty-second week of 2001 (EMP_HOURS_2001.22). Previously, these data were available only for respondents whose round 4 interview date occurred after the 22nd week of 2001; from the 23rd week of 2001, the data were available for all respondents, regardless of interview week. The files in the R5EH_hrs_update file fix this problem. Researchers should use the EMP_HOURS_2000.10 to the EMP_HOURS_2001.22 variables in this file rather than the variables presently in the August 2003 version of the NLSY97 Event History data.

The Rnumbers that correspond to these variables are the following:

    R8814700 [EMP_HOURS_2000.10] to R8819000 [EMP_HOURS_2000.53] and
    R8909400 [EMP_HOURS_2001.01] to R8911500 [EMP_HOURS_2001.22]

R5 Errata for May 2003 Release: Created Age at Interview Date Variable (CV_AGE_INT_DATE)

In the NLSY97 data released May 2003, the codebook page for the variable CV_AGE_INT_DATE incorrectly lists the frequencies for this variable. The data for this variable are correct and the documentation has been updated on the Round 5 Event History Release.

Round 4 Errata

Data Release 4.2
Corrections and Changes to the NLSY97 Data Release 4.2 of the data.

In the NLSY97 data release version 4.2, an error has been discovered in some of the variables which indicate the type of school the respondent has attended or is currently attending. The specific variables affected are the round 3 variable R3776700 NEWSCHOOL_SCHCODE.01 (824 cases) and the round 4 variables R5299900 NEWSCHOOL_SCHCODE.01 (642 cases) and R5300000 NEWSCHOOL_SCHCODE.02 (1 case). Virtually all of these errors are the misidentification of high schools as middle schools. The corrected versions of these variables can be "viewed" by clicking on the file names below. The whole set of corrected files may downloaded by clicking on the zip file.
Last updated 23 October 2002.

R4 Errata for release 4.3: Event History Variables
In the NLSY97 data release version 4.2, a number of inconsistencies exist in the marital and partner created variables and event histories. These inconsistencies resulted from the inability to match partners across rounds. In the round 5 main and event history releases, a spouse/partner roster (PARTNERS_*) includes an ID variable that allows users to link partners across rounds. The roster data were then used to recreate the created marriage and cohabitation variables on the round 5 main file and will be used to update the marital/cohabitation event history arrays on the event history release. Due to this improvement, users are encouraged to use the round 5 and beyond created and event history marriage and cohabitation variables for their research.

A) Errors in the R3 event history release to be corrected in the R4 main file release

1) Incorrect codebook codes - ASVAB data

The codebBook codes for ASVAB_AVG_GRADE_REC are incorrect. The label 'Mostly As' is currently paired with the value of 8 but it should be paired with the value of 1; the value of 8 should have been paired with the label 'Mostly below Ds'. The label 'Half As and Bs' is currently paired with the value of 7 but should be paired with the value of 2; the value of 7 should have been paired with the label 'Half Cs and Ds'. Thus, the values are correct, but users will need to correct the label until the next CD comes out.

B) Significant changes made between the R3 main file release and R3 event history release

1) Parent age variable - round 1

This variable saves the date at which the responding parent turns 18. The months that were previously set to zero have now been set to -3. Listed below are the affected variable and the affected number of cases.

  R0593000  P3-100_M      54 cases

2) Household Roster Changes - round 1

A substantial number of changes have been made to many of the round 1 Household roster variables. Most of these changes have involved recoding missing information from a zero to a -4 (valid skip). A much smaller number of changes have been made where discrepancies have been found between Household Roster information and Nonresident roster information, particularly in respect to the duplication of persons on these rosters. Most of the invalid duplication of persons has occurred on the Nonresident roster, bu t we have also found it necessary to remove a small number of duplicate persons from the Household roster Listed below are the affected variables and the affected number of cases.

3) Nonresident Roster Changes - rounds 1 through 3

A substantial number of changes to the nonresident roster variables have been made to achieve three main purposes: 1) to eliminate duplicate persons from the roster; 2) to correct information that was wrong in earlier versions; and 3) to add information which was previously missing from the roster but which did exist in the original "raw" screener questions. Listed below are the affected variable and the affected number of cases.

In addition, the round 2 variable titles CV_HGC_EVER and CV_HGC_YEAR were reversed before the in the round 3 event history release; these titles were attached to the correct data in the in the round 3 event history release.

6) MILCODE and MILFLAG variables - rounds 2 and 3

A review of the employment data revealed that a combination of technical errors and interviewer confusion were contributing to the underreporting of military jobs. Corrections have been made to the MILCODE and MILFLAG variables which will both add valid data to the variable and establish a consistency between the use of the 0 code for non-military jobs and the -4 code for valid skips. Listed below are the affected variable and the affected number of cases.

  R2469900  YEMP_MILCODE.01  530 cases

7) Changes to employment created variables

A number of updates were made to the employment created variables between the round 2 event history release and the r3 main release and the r3 event history release. These updates were due to (1) updates made to the employment programs to reflect the change in the way that dates are imputed (2) updates to the military code information in the employer roster and (3) a coding problem that caused other specify variables to be coded incorrectly. Rather than listing each round's changes separately, a complete list of all updates is below:
