Findings from recent studies by Lenore J. Weitzman (eg, see IRPS No. 30/85c00570) and others suggest that no-fault divorce has harmed women. These findings are tested by examining the effects of no-fault divorce on the financial situation of women using 1968-1983 data on salary and wage income, home ownership, and child support from the young women's cohort of the National Longitudinal Surveys of Labor Market Experience conducted by the US Bureau of Census. Analysis does not support the hypothesis that no-fault divorce produces adverse financial effects; rather, it appears that no-fault has had little effect on women's finances. Alternative models that might explain how divorce law affects the financial condition of women are suggested. 6 Tables, 33 References.
