School-Based Learning Programs

Respondents were asked in rounds 1-12 about school programs that help students learn about the world of work. Respondents reported whether their school had a day when adults came to talk about their jobs; they also reported any participation in school-based learning programs (such as internships, mentoring, etc.). After round 12, the questions are no longer asked.

Educational Status & Attainment

CV_ENROLLSTAT. Informs the user about whether the respondent is enrolled; whether enrolled respondents are in grades K-12 or in a 2- or 4-year college or graduate program; and what level of degree or diploma (or GED certificate) respondents have obtained.

College Experience

Created Variables

CV_ASSOC_CREDITS and CV_BA_CREDITS. Calculates the fraction of credits toward an associate's or bachelor's degree that each respondent attending college has earned as of each round's interview date.

Household, Geography & Contextual Variables: An Introduction

The NLSY97 has collected a wide array of information on demographic, household, and neighborhood characteristics. Table 1 summarizes the topics and universe restrictions.

Education, Training & Achievement Scores: An Introduction

Data on NLSY97 respondents' educational activities, attitudes, and status are obtained in questions on schooling. These grade-appropriate questions ask about the respondent's educational experience prior to high school, in high school, and in college.

NLSY97 data include formal training experiences of respondents outside of their regular schooling.

The school and transcript surveys gathered data about the schools in the NLSY97 sample areas and the academic records of NLSY97 respondents.

Work Experience

Created Variables

Variables created to provide work experience data vary according to the type of job the respondent has (employee versus self-employed). Table 1 has been created so that users can more easily find the appropriate variable to use. Work experience variables are created for each survey year.
