How do I cite NLS data?

For the convenience of researchers, we provide the following suggested citations for NLS data in text and in references. Users should note that the references include years and round numbers and should be adjusted according to the actual data being used. Please contact NLS User Services if you have any questions.

In text:

The NLSY79 survey is sponsored and directed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and conducted by the Center for Human Resource Research at The Ohio State University. Interviews are conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago.

The Mature and Young Women surveys are sponsored and directed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and conducted by the Center for Human Resource Research at The Ohio State University. Interviews were conducted by the Census Bureau and took place in 1967-2003 (Mature Women) and in 1968-2003 (Young Women).

The Older Men and Young Men surveys are sponsored and directed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and conducted by the Center for Human Resource Research at The Ohio State University. Interviews were conducted by the Census Bureau and took place in 1966-1990 (Older Men) and in 1966-1981 (Young Men).

The Children of the NLSY79 survey is sponsored and directed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development. The survey is managed by the Center for Human Resource Research at The Ohio State University and interviews are conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago.

The NLSY97 survey is sponsored and directed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, with assistance from the Center for Human Resource Research at The Ohio State University.
