The NLSY97 Sample: An Introduction

Official Title: National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 (NLSY97), part of the National Longitudinal Surveys (NLS) program.

Age of cohort: Born between 1980 and 1984. At the time of first interview, respondents' ages ranged from 12 to 18. The respondents were 36 to 42 at the time of their round 20 interviews. (Round 20 is the most recent data release, fielded in 2021-2022.)

Industry & Occupation Tables

These tables summarize the industries and occupations reported by NLSY97 respondents with employee jobs.

Administration of the CAT-ASVAB

PIAT Math Test

Created Variables

CV_PIAT_STANDARD_SCORE and CV_PIAT_STANDARD_SCORE_UPD. These report respondent's standard score for the PIAT. New norms were released in 1998 (Markwardt).  The NLSY97 used the original and the updated norms for rounds 1 through 3 and the updated norms for rounds 4 through 6. Researchers should use the variable CV_PIAT_STANDARD_SCORE for original norms and CV_PIAT_STANDARD_UPD and for the updated norms.

Achievement Tests

Community Participation & Volunteerism

In rounds 9, 11, and 15-16, respondents answered questions about participating in unpaid volunteer work, including any activities aimed at changing social conditions. Respondents indicated the main reason for doing the work: court ordered, required for a school or religious group, or strictly voluntary.

Computer & Internet Access

Computer use is much more an integral part of a respondent's daily life now than it was when the NLSY97 project first began. Accordingly, questions have been added to gather details on computer and Internet access and use.

Political Participation

In rounds 8, 10, 12, and 14, the NLSY97 collected information on political participation and interest. The section consists of three questions: (1) level of interest in politics and public affairs, (2) whether the respondent voted in the November election, and (3) for those who did not vote, whether the respondent was registered to vote in the November election.
