This paper explores empirically a number of leading theories of job change and wage growth, especially the relationships between general work experience, job tenure, job change and wages. Wages and job change are modeled jointly to incorporate the potential endogeneity of job tenure. The econometric model exploits the precise dating of job changes and the panel data on wages within jobs in the NLSY to explore their implications for distinguishing among these hypotheses. The estimates indicate a significant effect of job tenure on wages and the hazard of job separation, as well as evidence of returns to job search, job turnover due to match quality, and job specific human capital investments.

This paper explores the simultaneity of education and ability using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. We estimate joint models of educational progression and scores on the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) allowing for simultaneity in two ways. First, we allow for direct feedback: the dependent variables in the AFQT and schooling equations appear as explanatory variables in the other equation. The second way is through unmeasured family background factors which are allowed to influence both AFQT and schooling progression. We find that more years of schooling significantly raise measured AFQT and that greater ability as measured by AFQT significantly increases the propensity to continue in school at every level. Failure to account for the timing of AFQT measurement and correlation due to common unmeasured family background results in a very substantial bias toward overstatement of the effect of AFQT on secondary school progression.

Private Sector Training: Who Gets It and What Are Its Effects

Training after high school in the United States was studied to determine who is trained and the extent of training, as well as economic consequences of training. Data sources were the Current Population Survey (CPS) of 1983, the NLS of Young Men, Older Men, and Mature Women cohorts for 1967 to 1980, and the Employment Opportunities Pilot Projects Surveys (training of the economically disadvantaged in 1979 and 1980). It was found that nearly 40% of both men and women in the CPS reported undertaking training to improve current job skills. For a given 2- year period in the NLS, the fractions of young men, career women, and older men reporting some training were about 30%, 24%, and 10%, respectively. For all three groups, the employer was the single most important source of training. Only 11% of the disadvantaged sample reported some training over a similar time interval, with a relatively low proportion getting training from company sources. Also assessed are analyses concerning factors that determine the probability of getting training for each source and type of training, and the effects of training on earnings, earnings growth, and employment stability. The purpose of this paper is to examine women's life course transitions over three life domains (fertility, marriage, and education) by considering the following distinct behavioral "processes": marital and nonmarital fertility, getting married (or remarried), getting divorced, and completed education and enrollment status. We provide a more complete description of women's life course during the young adult years by analyzing the determinants of the patterns and timing of these events using flexible conceptual and statistical models which account for their inherent dynamic nature and their jointness. We model a series of simultaneous hazard (and probit) equations in which the endogeneity of outcomes of related processes is incorporated to test a number of substantive hypotheses. The data are from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth.

This paper analyzes educational choices made by young women in the United States. The focus is on the consequences of family formation outcomes (fertility and marriage) for schooling decisions. In order to address the issue of selectivity among women who bear children and/or get married while in school, we develop a model in which schooling, fertility, and marriage decisions are considered jointly. The empirical model of schooling explicitly recognizes that decisions to proceed in school are taken sequentially, over time. We use the precise timing of events in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth to determine the effects on schooling continuation decisions. The relative timing of pregnancies, marriage dates, and graduation dates are used to gain insight into the directions of causality and the magnitude of the effects.

We examined the determinants of nonmarital fertility, focusing on the effects of other life-course events: education, marriage, marital dissolution, and marital fertility. Since these determinants are potentially endogenous, we modeled the processes that generate them jointly with nonmarital fertility and accounted for the sequencing of events and the unobserved correlations across processes. The results showed that the risk of nonmarital conception increases immediately after leaving school and that the educational effects are less pronounced for black women than for other women. The risk is lower for previously married women than for never-married women, even controlling for age, but this reduction is only significant for black women. The more children a woman already has, the lower her risk of nonmarital childbearing, particularly if the other children were born during a previous marriage. Ignoring endogeneity issues seriously biases the estimates of several substantively important effects.

The purpose of this paper is to further develop theoretical aspects of women's life course by broadening our empirical understanding of key life course concepts and discussing the implications. First, we explore how our contributions expand upon the dynamic nature of the life course perspective. Second, we advance our understanding of the ways in which transitions (short run) are embedded within specific trajectories by modeling several trajectories in a simultaneous fashion. Finally, we present some empirical findings using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth and conclude by recommending future directions for life course research.
